Major sections of Tamil Nadu traders' decide to boycott Coca-Cola and PepsiCo beverages starting March 1 which is likely to cost the multinational giants a 1,400 crore loss in annual sales. If the ban is to include food products as well, the loss would be significantly higher. Both firms put together have five manufacturing plants in the state. The traders accuse the firms of exploiting the water bodies of the state to manufacture their widely consumed popular drinks while the state itself was facing an agriculture crisis due to severe drought. This decision is being well received as the well being of farmers is now first priority in the state. However this decision comes in a time when the government is considering a fat tax on such drinks and packaged snacks in the upcoming budget. A committee headed by the health secretary is already in place to discuss matters such as increasing taxation and restricting marketing and advertising of sugary drinks.
