It's kind of a confusing term because it's really in theory very similar to what a microscope does and that is bring something very small in to much larger focus. When shooting macro images it's important to remember that you're going to need more depth of field, because you are so close the point of focus is going to be very, very shallow. Macro photography is great for subjects likes bugs or flowers, a lot of nature stuff. It is a really great form of photography. It's really beautiful. It's a great way to make abstract images and kind of trick the eye into not really knowing what you're looking at. So in thinking macro photography think, you know, like artists like Georgiou Keith, the painter. Really close ups of flowers that are abstract and you don't know quite what they are. That's a really great example in painting form of a good use of macro photography. It's important to remember that a lot of lenses these days will say macro on them when in fact that not really macro lenses. A true dedicated macro lens is generally around a focal length of a hundred, hundred and twenty, tire focal lengths like that. Generally it will have such a good close focusing distance that you can literally touch the subject and still have it in focus. That's really the mark of like a true macro lens. The next thing about macro photography is there is a lot of room for experimentation. It's something you can really easily do in your back yard, in garden, in a park, and the possibilities are really endless. That's really the reason why it's so popular and the results are so beautiful. This is just some basic information about macro photography.

When you go up in ISO's, your camera can do better in low light situations; however you sacrifice the grain quality, and you start to get something called "noise," which is just sort of patterns in the shadows, and also in the highlights of your image. Higher end cameras will have better noise reduction and just look better at higher ISO's, whereas lower end cameras, they're going to reach a point where you're not going to be able to go any further. This is a Nikon D700. I can push this up to about ISO 6400, which is just fast enough to allow me to hand hold it at night and still get a clear image. However, if I was shooting with something like this guy here, this is the Sony RX100, it also goes to ISO 6400, but the image quality just doesn't look quite as good. This is something I'd probably want a tripod mount, whereas this is something I could probably hold in my hands. And that's just a few tips on getting better nighttime photos without using your flash.

In my opinion, good composition at least the way I see it is the frame is going to be filled completely and the entirety of the frame is going to keep your interest and draw your interest. It might be a juxtaposition between two things. It might be a lot of things, your eye wanders around. It might be one place where the entire photo draws you into that spot. It's just important to have no area in the photograph that's just sort of space that's not really needed. And that's not to say negative space is bad because negative space is very, very important. It helps to balance a lot of photographs. I'm talking more about what I would call dead space. Space that doesn't do anything. It doesn't add anything. That's what you want to try to avoid. Another little trick for getting good composition is, and this is something that I do also, is I like to shoot wide and then crop in and compose the photo afterwards. Now, a lot of professional photographers will sort of scoff at that idea and say, "Oh, you got to crop in camera. That's the only way to do it." But photography's a learning experience and with each photograph you take you're going to get better. And there's really nothing wrong with cropping after the fact. Obviously going for that perfect composition the first time is a great way to go, but don't feel like you're tied down to that. What I did when I was first learning, what worked for me compositionally speaking was I would go out with an idea in my head of how I wanted to shoot every scene that day and that's what I would do. And this is an example I did recently. I was up in East Harlem, just shooting around. And I wanted to frame everything split down the middle, juxtaposing one side to the other. Not the rule of thirds, but this is how I shot that day in particular and it happened to work for me. And it's a great thing to do. You know come up with something that you want to achieve. Maybe it's not split down the middle. Maybe it's you want to balance something on the right. Maybe you want to follow the rule of thirds. But decide that and go out and do it and practice it and see what works and what doesn't work. Keep in mind that there is really no formula for good composition. Photography is about experimenting. It's about having fun. It's about seeing what you can create. It's certainly not about having rules. So I would just encourage you know, figure out what you like and go for it.

But decide that and go out and do it and practice it and see what works and what doesn't work. Keep in mind that there is really no formula for good composition. Photography is about experimenting. It's about having fun. It's about seeing what you can create. It's certainly not about having rules. So I would just encourage you know, figure out what you like and go for it.

So this vast number of lenses gives you a lot of options in terms of what you're shooting to get the kind of look that you want. It's just going to be a nice tight crop with no distortion. Whereas this wide angle lens is going to have a lot of distortion, but you get a lot in the frame. So like I said, all digital SLR cameras need a lens to take pictures otherwise you just have a mirror and a sensor in there. Simply take your lens, remove the caps, and attach it on. And that's one of the nice things about digital photography if you have an SLR, is you can switch your lenses out. Whereas, if you're using a point-and-shoot camera, the lens is fixed and you obviously can't remove it. So when you take a picture, what the lens physically does is there's multiple elements inside of this and those elements bring the light in, obviously into focus, and direct it back into the sensor that's behind the mirror. That's how you get your image. The better the lens quality, the better the image is going to look. Finer lenses, more expensive lenses have just better ground glass with better coatings that help get rid of lens flair, chromatic aberration. This is something that you're going to need a tripod for if you want to attempt. Here's an example of one that I shot. This is in Hoboken, looking out at a dock with seagulls. And the reason I did this as a long exposure, other than the fact that it was a night time shot, was to kind of give a very soft appearance to the waves in the water. If you extend out your shutter speed, really interesting things start to happen. This one, in particular happens to be an eight second exposure, so it gave it just enough time for the water that was slowly coming in, just to smooth out and have a really nice sort of cottony flow. It's also really popular with photographs of highways or street scenes, to get those long streaks of light. It's important also to remember, you know, with a photo like this, that if you're doing a long exposure, you're going to need to compensate both your ISO and/or your aperture to make up for the fact that you're letting a lot of light in over a long period of time. Mine was for eight seconds, but there's no reason you couldn't do a 30 second exposure, a one minute exposure, a one hour exposure. Let's say you were going to attempt a one hour exposure, you'd probably want a really, really high F-stop with a really tiny opening just to control that light as it comes in and maybe a low ISO. It's all about that equation just keeping everything balanced. But you know at night time it's really easy to do that because there's not a lot of light you're working with to begin with. As long as you have something to stabilize your camera with, it's really easy to try and there's a lot of creativity that you can get into if you do decide to give it a try. And those are just the basics of long exposure photography.

A lot of people will caution you against shooting early in the afternoon or around noontime, just because the sun is directly up in the sky and you're going to get very harsh shadows under people's faces. Another thing to take into account is also the weather. All photographers love cloudy days. And it's not because photographers are depressed people. It's because when it's a cloudy day, the clouds act as a giant diffuser -- an umbrella, if you will -- over the sun -- your light source -- and as a result, you just get really, really beautiful soft light with no shadows. A really great time to shoot is what is called magic hour or golden hour, and that's when the sun is at one of its lowest points in the sky and just kind of illuminates the surroundings with a really beautiful golden light. And it only lasts for about 15 to 20 minutes. Here's an example of it. This is shot during what's called Manhattan-henge, when the sun lines up directly with the grid of Manhattan. Happens twice a year. And it's just a really great time to shoot, and you can get some really interesting results. So keep that in mind. I'd also like to mention that in addition to the hour or, you know, little bit of time window before the sun goes down, it's also the same as when the sun comes up. That time right when it's at its lowest point in the sky, before it reaches too high. That's also golden hour. Avoid noontime. Avoid direct sunlight. Go for those clouds. And if you're going to shoot in the sun, shoot for golden hour.

Now, if you've never heard of RAW before it's a really marvelous thing for photography. What a RAW file essentially is, it's very similar to a JPEG file, but instead of just saving the single exposure that you shot it saves a full range up and down below that exposure. So, you have the ability after the fact to edit the image with actual data instead of just manipulating pixels. For example, if I shoot a photograph at 1/60 second, f 2.8, ISO 400, when I shoot a JPEG I'm just saving that specific image at that specific exposure. However, if it's a RAW file it's going to give me way up and way below. The same thing goes for the white balance of the image. This basically means if I shot a photograph, let's say outdoors, and my white balance was set to indoor lighting, everything's going to look really off. It's going to look really yellow. However, thanks to RAW processing, and we'll get into RAW processing programs, I can go back and correct that with physical data. Most cameras have their own proprietary RAW extension. So, it's never going to be thefilename.RAW. It'll be something like .NEF, .DNG, .CR2. Basically these can all be converted down once you start processing them, and saved as TIFF files. Layered TIFF files, much like JPEG files, can be universally read by most computers and most editing software. The nice thing about a TIFF file is as you work with it it saves much more data in that file than a JPEG would. So, whenever shooting an assignment I, without question, will always put my camera into RAW. Because, obviously, the goal is to get the right exposure and the right white balance the first time, however nobody's perfect and nobody can take into account extraneous factors. It's just nice to have that as a backup. Of course the file size is going to be a lot larger, and it's more data you're processing, but the payoff is much higher, too. The good: The Olympus PEN E-P5 renders extremely good photos for its class, and has a streamlined shooting design. Plus, it's fast. The bad: The navigation button/dial is annoyingly awkward, and I wish the flash tilted. The bottom line: An excellent entry in the Micro Four Thirds universe, the Olympus PEN E-P5 should please a lot of folks, but it's also expensive given that it doesn't deliver best-in-class photo quality. Normally a two-year product cycle isn't that much for a camera targeted at advanced photographers. But in a field where technology mutates as quickly as it does for advanced interchangeable-lens cameras, that's a long time. So at two years since the Olympus PEN E-P3, it feels like it's taken just a little too long for the PEN E-P5's debut. But in addition to incorporating the sensor, autofocus, and image stabilization systems from the E-M5, the E-P5 gains a tiltable touch screen; broader scene analysis in auto mode; 1080/30p video; and other features. All the changes add up to what feels like a completely different camera, with better photo quality, a more streamlined design, faster performance, and a broader feature set. You can buy the camera either as body-only or as a kit that includes the 17mm f1.8 lens plus add-on electronic viewfinder. The latter configuration is expensive, but I'm quite partial to the EVF. It's humongous, but it's a lot more stable to shoot that way. If you do opt for the body only, resist the impulse to pair it with the cheap 14-42mm lens; a camera like this really cries out for a sharp, high-quality lens. Image quality The E-P5 delivers the best image quality I've seen from a Micro Four Thirds camera, finally ratcheting up my image quality rating, but it's still not quite as good as APS-C competitors. The camera's JPEGs look good up through ISO 400, and OK through ISO 800; by ISO 1600 the noise suppression gets aggressive. I really wouldn't shoot at ISO 3200 or higher with the E-P5. As it is, at ISO 1600, only the precisely sharp areas look good viewed at 100 percent, though 13x19 prints look OK. You can gain a little latitude by shooting raw, though you're generally exchanging mushiness for graininess. Olympus' image processing has gotten better since the O-MD E-M5, with less sharpening and less of the crunchy look.

Shutter speed is a really simple concept and really easy to break down. And I'm going to show you first on this camera and then I'm going to write it out on the white board. So I got my camera here. I'm going to set it to exposure of 1/400th of a second, which sounds like this. Real fast. But as I dial it down, and let's say I go down to a tenth of a second, it's a lot slower. So on and so forth. Really just sort of common sense. To one half, one over one half a second. And then this is a full one second exposure. So if I was shooting something like a race car race or a horse race, obviously an exposure like this, a shutter speed like this, isn't going to work. Kind of the rule of thumb is a 1/500th of a second is generally the lowest you want to go when shooting sports or action. Shutter speeds are an equation. It's always a one over something else. You know, so some really very basic shutter speeds are 1/30th of a second, 1/60th, 1/120th, 1/250th, 1/500th. And again, these relate back into your F-stop. If you're shooting something that's fast, you want a faster shutter speed. If you're shooting something stationary, you can use a slower shutter speed. Another thing you really need to keep in mind, though is that human hands really can't hold a camera steady at slower than about a 60th of a second. So if you're going down to a 30th, a 15th, a tenth, you going to want to put your camera on a tripod. If you have enough light to work with and you can get over a 60th, you should be okay. One really important factor to keep in mind is every time you double the speed of your shutter, you're letting half the light in. Shutter speed is a really simple concept and really easy to break down. And I'm going to show you first on this camera and then I'm going to write it out on the white board. So I got my camera here. I'm going to set it to exposure of 1/400th of a second, which sounds like this. Real fast. But as I dial it down, and let's say I go down to a tenth of a second, it's a lot slower. So on and so forth. Really just sort of common sense. To one half, one over one half a second. And then this is a full one second exposure. So if I was shooting something like a race car race or a horse race, obviously an exposure like this, a shutter speed like this, isn't going to work. Kind of the rule of thumb is a 1/500th of a second is generally the lowest you want to go when shooting sports or action. Shutter speeds are an equation. It's always a one over something else. You know, so some really very basic shutter speeds are 1/30th of a second, 1/60th, 1/120th, 1/250th, 1/500th. And again, these relate back into your F-stop. If you're shooting something that's fast, you want a faster shutter speed. If you're shooting something stationary, you can use a slower shutter speed. Another thing you really need to keep in mind, though is that human hands really can't hold a camera steady at slower than about a 60th of a second. So if you're going down to a 30th, a 15th, a tenth, you going to want to put your camera on a tripod. If you have enough light to work with and you can get over a 60th, you should be okay. One really important factor to keep in mind is every time you double the speed of your shutter, you're letting half the light in. So to compensate, you're going to have to adjust either your aperture or your ISO to make sure you're still getting the same amount of light. That's something we'll touch on more in exposure basics.

And the proper exposure is pretty obvious. It's just making sure everything, whatever your subject is, is lit well. There are three ways you can control your exposure. It's basically a balance of these three equations. It's your ISO, which is your grain quality. It's the overall quality of your image. Your shutter speed, which is how fast the shutter is opening and closing, exposing the sensor in your camera behind it. And your aperture, which is how wide the opening in your lens is, how much light it's letting in. If we're shooting, let's say, at an ISO of 400, which is a very standard ISO. It was a very popular film speed back in the day before digital. And these days it's a very popular outdoor ISO. Let's say you're shooting at ISO 400 and you're shooting at f/2.8, so very open amount of space in your lens, a lot of light coming in. And you're shooting at 1/500th of a second. And that's the correct exposure. Let's say I'm taking a picture of my dog outside. I like the way my dog looks but I want to get more of the background in focus. What can I do to do that? Well, I can bring my F-stop up to a higher F-stop and give it more depth of field. The smaller the opening in your lens, the more things will be in focus in the frame. So let's say we bring it up to f/5.6. Well, if you look at your F-stop scale again, it's f/2.8, f/4, f/5.6. So we're going up two stops. That means we need to adjust either the ISO or the shutter speed accordingly to make it the same exposure. Now, what we could do is we could take it, this down one stop to 1/250th and bring this up one stop to ISO 800. This will be the same exact exposure. Let's say that f/5.6 isn't cutting it and we want to go, have even more depth of field. We want to go up to f/8 to one more stop. It'd be the same thing. We can bring this down one more, we can bring that down one more. So we bring this down to 1/125th, keep this at 800. Again, it's the same thing. So just a matter of knowing that first exposure and doing the math in your head to adjust accordingly each way. ISO, as you go up you're letting more light in. Pentax makes a whole line of rugged cameras that do really, really well under water, that I highly recommend. Or you can get an underwater housing for your camera you already own. Most manufacturers out there make their own proprietary housings, and there are also third-party housings out there, as well. It's recommended, if you are looking into getting an underwater housing to shoot in the ocean or the pool, don't skimp out on the housing, because obviously the cheaper brands are more susceptible to leaks, and they might give you less tactile control of your camera. Again though, it's sometimes better to go for a camera specifically made for shooting under water, like Pentax's Optio series, because they have things like LED lights around the lens, which will illuminate your subjects under water and just give a really nice photo; whereas if I had this in a housing, I wouldn't have that advantage. Another thing to remember is as you swim deeper, so let's say you're scuba diving with your camera, the deeper you go, obviously the more light you're going to need; whereas if you are shooting just your family in the pool, on vacation or something, you're not going to really need to worry about that so much. Again though, I can't stress it enough: Do not buy a cheap underwater housing. You will regret it in the end.
